Termites are the most costly of pests that homeowners face. What is worse is that they are often hard to detect and quick to invade. Knowing what to look for and where to look, could help you to catch them early and save you thousands on treatments and repairs.

Where do termites like to hide?
Termites like to hide in areas of high moisture. Ensure that you keep subfloors and roof voids dry and well ventilated.
Within the home, any timber such as your home frame, structural timber, floors or furniture is a possible termite magnet.
Looking outside the house termites are highly attracted to such areas as, garden beds, mulch, landscaping timbers, woodpiles, dead trees, and stumps. It is especially best to avoid building garden beds against the house where they could block weep holes.
Here are a few signs that you may have termites:
Soft or hollow sounding timber
Splitting or blistering paint
Termite mudding or tubing
Damage to skirting boards, door jams or architraves
Buckling or squeaky floorboards
Crumbling damaged wood
Roundish mounds around the home or within trees
Quiet clicking sounds within walls
Doors and windows difficult to open/close
Noticeable discolouration to floors, ceilings, or walls
Roof tiles damaged
Damage or termite workings to retaining walls, tree and stumps, perimeter fences
How to deter termites?
There are several things you can do around the house to help deter termites. Here are some areas to get you started.
Reduce areas of increased moisture around the house
Avoid garden beds adjacent to the house
Reduce termite food around the home.
Cardboard boxes and waste timber stored off the ground level
Firewood is stored off ground level away from the home
Keep areas around the house clear, such as subfloors to maintain ventilation
Ensure subfloor venting is not blocked
Ensure roof guttering and downpipes don’t leak
Ensure you have no leaking pipes. Check
Air conditioners
Hot water systems
Leaking taps
Ensure the weep holes are kept clear of obstacles including concrete, dirt, garden mulch
Ensure posts are placed on metal stirrups
Maintaining the above areas is essential, but it is even more important, however, to maintain regular Pest Inspections. While you may have had a treatment to eliminate a previous infestation of termites, there is no guarantee that they won’t return.
